Introducing the faculty's library

 

The library of the Faculty of Letters and Humanities was established in 1973 in Se Gush (the triangular building). This library, which is the oldest library at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, is commissioned to provide the researchers with all possible resources that are published in the fields of Persian, English and French language and literature as well as history and geography. Also, considering the fact that most of the library's clients are students, faculty members and university staff, it focuses on meeting the requirements of the mentioned groups by constant monitoring of their needs.

Location

All the four separate libraries of the Faculty of Letters and Humanities, occupying an area of 300 cubic meters, are on the ground floor of the faculty. These sections include:

1.      Shahid Hamed Jorfi Library: This library has the resources for the two departments of English and French language and literature and is on the north side of the faculty across from the Office of Education. The library accommodates spaces such as the manager's room, the lending desk, the desk for reviewing references, dissertations, the Reference section, and the Latin resources.

 

2.      Shahid Afraz Library: It contains resources in the Persian language, history and geography. It is located on the east side of the faculty across from the department of Persian language and literature. This library accommodates various sections including the lending desk, Persian resources, and the Reference section.

3.      Journals: It contains an archive of 144 journals in foreign languages published before 2005 and 950 journals in Persian which are arranged and shelved based on their titles and the year of publication.

4.      Study hall: With a seating capacity of 30, it has 21 single study tables and 1 study table for 8 people.

 

Reference Works

 

This library has 28886 volumes of Persian books and 25543 volumes of foreign books as well as 144 non-Persian archival journals, 950 journals in Persian, and more than 559 dissertation titles. Also, it has an invaluable archive of 188 volumes of lithographic books and manuscripts on historical and literary subjects, which, due to having no appropriate space in the library, are regrettably kept somewhere else. This library has a comprehensive web-based software application for searching called Pars Azarakhsh for retrieving, as well as quick and easy access to, bibliographic information of available resources. The library's classification system is based on the classification system of the US Congress Library.

 

Facilities

 

The library has 102 one-sided shelves, 103 two-sided shelves and 10 computers connected to the Wireless Internet network, of which 5 are for the clients, 4 are for the lending desk, and 1 is for data entry. In addition, the library has a printer, 2 bar code readers, 2 credit card readers, 5 split air conditioners, a drinking water purifier, and a refrigerator.

 

The services at the library include:

 

1.      Collecting information about the resources which should be purchased and selecting information about the latest resources relevant to the needs of each discipline

2.      Instructing clients to use the Azarsa system for having access to the required resources

3.      Preparing guiding manuals for introducing Persian and Latin databases as well as the digital library

4.      Updating the portal of the library of the Faculty of Letters and Humanities

5.      Preparing library resources for the use of clients

6.      Lending non-reference books to undergraduate students (3 books for 14 days), postgraduate students (7 books for 20 days), Ph.D. candidates (10 books for 30 days), and the university staff (3 books for 15 days).

7.      Providing reference services (answering questions and preparing bibliographies)

8.      Providing interlibrary services

9.      Preparing reports on library services and activities

10.  Preparing the overall program of the library

11.  Providing appropriate physical facilities

 

The working hours of the library are from 7:30 to 14:30 and all students, professors and staff of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, as well as students who are members of Ghadir Project from all over the country can use the services and resources of the library. Also, Persian and Latin databases and the digital library are available to library members full time.
