The Department of English Language and Literature

 

History:

The Department of English Language and Literature began its official activities by accepting undergraduate students in the field of English Language and Literature in 1970 and subsequently students in the field of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). The quantitative and qualitative expansion of the department continued unceasingly until 1977 when the department managed to admit master's degree students of TEFL. In 1977, the Department of English Language and Literature used the teaching capacity of 28 full-time faculty members, including an associate professor, 6 assistant professors, and 21 instructors, twenty of whom were of non-Iranian nationality. At present, relying on the sincere endeavors of its twelve faculty members, including two full professors, one associate professor, and 9 assistant professors, the department accepts students in bachelor's (English Language and Literature, and English Translation), master's (TEFL and English Literature) and PhD (TEFL) programs offered in in day time, night time, and self-automated campus schemes every year. The enrollment of international students in the master's degree in this department began in the academic year 2018-2019. In order to expand the educational fields of the English Language and Literature Department, this department seeks to establish two programs of language translation and general linguistics. Since 2015, with the establishment of the University Language Center, the Department of English Language and Literature has expanded its range of educational and research services to various departments of the university and other governmental and non-governmental institutions.

Bachelor's program of English Translation: 155 students

Bachelor's program of English Language and Literature: 110 students

Master's program of English Language Teaching: 44 students

PhD program of English Language Teaching: 23 students

The department's educational focus:

In addition to teaching courses related to the three fields of study in the department and offering General English courses to all departments of the university, faculty members in this department pursue their educational activities by holding workshops and offering training courses related to English at the university level, and to institutions seeking such services. In this regard, the activities of the faculty members in the University Language Center, the University Central Library, and AZFA (Center for Teaching Persian to non-Persian speakers) are also noteworthy.

 

Research focus of the department:

Faculty members of the department have published scientific articles in prestigious domestic and foreign journals and have published numerous books on such topics as discourse analysis, second language acquisition, language assessment, syllabus design, translation studies, general linguistics (lexicology and syntax), literary criticism, postcolonial literature, oriental studies, and comparative literature.

There are currently two professors, one associate professor, and nine assistant professors in the department, all of whom are engaged in their educational and research activities in the following fields:
