Department of French Language and Literature

 

 

History:

The Department of French Language and Literature of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz started its official activities in 1974 (at the then Jundishapur University) by accepting the first group of undergraduate students. Initially, the faculty members of the department were all of foreign nationality, until 1979 when the Islamic Revolution took place and Iranian professors joined the department. The department also started to offer a master's degree program in 1977, but its educational activities ceased after the Cultural Revolution and the departure of the majority of its faculty members. After the revolution, new faculty members joined the department of French Language and Literature and worked there until the Cultural Revolution and the closure of the university. After the Cultural Revolution and upon the reopening of the university, this department resumed its educational activities by admitting undergraduate students in 1988. In 2003, the Department of French Language and Literature was given the license to admit students for a master's degree program, and in 2013, it succeeded in launching a doctorate program in French literature. Also in 2010, the department launched the scientific-research journal of Studies of French Language and Literature, which was the first Latin scientific-research journal at the university. This journal was selected as a distinguished journal in the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the university in 2015. The Department of French Language and Literature of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz currently has eight faculty members with the rank of assistant professors and accepts students in bachelor's, master's and PhD programs. It also proudly welcomes international students, especially those from neighboring countries. The faculty members of this department have published 10 books and about 50 articles, and have implemented 5 research projects.

Educational focus of the department:

The curriculum of the undergraduate programs focuses on teaching basic French language, French grammar, translation from Persian to French and vice versa, an overview of French literature from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, as well as studying poetry, plays and novels in French literature. At postgraduate level, the focus is on classical literature, realism, French romanticism, nineteenth- and twentieth-century French poetry, contemporary novels, comparative literature, literary analysis, and interpretive criticism in France. Finally, the educational focus in the PhD program of French Literature is on modern methods of literary criticism (thematic criticism, socio-historical criticism, and psychoanalytical criticism), modern literary theories, reception theories in literature, comparative literature, imagery, structural analysis of literary texts, and literature and philosophy.

Research focus of the department:

 The faculty members of the Department of French Language and Literature have published and presented scientific articles in prestigious domestic and international journals and conferences on the following topics: French language and literature, literary criticism, comparative literature, language teaching, linguistics, literary work analysis, translation, and translation criticism.

There are currently 8 assistant professors as faculty members in the Department of French Language and Literature. Their fields of specialty include: French literature, comparative literature, linguistics, language teaching, cognitive sciences, language and civilization, and French literature.
